Chincoteague Ponies Safe After Hurricane Irene
According to local sources, the Chincoteague ponies made out well during Hurricane Irene. The ponies reside on Assateague Island for most of the year, surviving a variety of severe weather conditions. On Saturday, August 27, 2011, Assateague Island experienced heavy rainfall, high winds, storm surges, and minor flooding from Hurricane Irene. By Sunday afternoon, skies cleared and the waters began subsiding. As early as Monday, reports were circulating that the ponies had weathered the storm safely.
