Assateague Island Beaches to Open for Labor Day Weekend

Workers at Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge, Assateague National Seashore and Assateague State Park have been busy repairing damage from Hurricane Irene just one week before the 2011 Labor Day weekend. On the Virginia side, Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge reopened on a limited basis on Tuesday August 30, 2011.

Although the southern beach and parking lots were not accessible, visitors had the option of parking at alternate lots and hiking or biking thru the wildlife loop and along the trail to the beach. A temporary lifeguard station is expected to remain in place thru Friday.

Work is ongoing to restore the main parking lots at the southern end of Assateague which were damaged during the storm surge from Hurricane Irene. According to sources, the beach will open by Saturday and be available throughout Labor Day weekend.

On the northern section of Assateague Island, Maryland Park Service (MPS) reopened Assateague State Park on August 30. The campground will be open beginning Wednesday, August 31.
