2009 Pony Swim, Penning and Auction

The following is a brief description of where to see the wild ponies during Pony Swim and Auction week.

Monday, July 27, 2009 is the date of the Beach Walk. Chincoteague ponies are led down the beach from the north corral to the south corral. Pony enthusiasts wishing to see this event can meet at Assateague Beach by 6 a.m.

From Monday thru Wednesday, the ponies can be seen and photographed at the south corral on Chincoteague Wildlife Refuge. Look for the corral on the right, just before the beach.

The 2009 Pony Swim is on Wednesday, July 29. Contact the Chincoteague Chamber of Commerce For parking and shuttle bus information for this event. At slack tide, the ponies swim Assateague Channel to Memorial Park. After a brief rest, ponies are herded to the Carnival Grounds. The first colt to make the crossing is named King or Queen Neptune and given away during the the carnival.

Visitors get another chance to see the ponies on Thursday, July 30 at the world famous Chincoteague Pony Penning and Auction.
