2009 Earth Day on Chincoteague Island
Chincoteague held its’ first Earth Day celebration last year successfully promoting the education and care for our environment Mother Earth. The community and beyond found this event to be alot of fun and educational. We are happy to announce the 2nd Annual Mother Earth Day Celebration to be held on May 9, 2009 at The Robert Reed Park in the heart of historic downtown.
Among the festivities will be music, art, and educational activities for all ages.
The town of Chincoteague will have a trailer on site to collect your small appliances, old computer equipment, and electronics. Helping the community get these to their proper disposal sites! Birdhouses painted by local artists will be auctioned off to raise money for our downtown park. The Marine Consortium will have educational displays and hands on touch tanks to show the impacts of water pollution and impacts on our environment.
The Wetlands Environmental Trailer will be on site to educate on the environmental issues we face on the island. The High School Art Classes will have for sale hand painted Birdhouse gourds. All proceeds going to the school Art Department Fund to purchase art supplies. The “Path of Enlightenment” trailing 80 feet in length will be made up of cardboard box materials; holding questions and answers for you and your family to explore global issues and discover ways to make changes in your lifestyles to help the planet. Things like energy efficient lightbulbs, fixing leaky faucets, what can be re-cycled, how to reduce, reuse, and respect our homes and environment!
The “Free Cycle Booth” will share its’ proceeds to the High School Computer Lab. Here you can bring a working electronic you no longer use and swap it for something you may use. At 3pm all items left in the booth will sell for $5.
There will be also be an arts and crafts show with over 40 artists featuring Photography, Paintings, Clothing, Basketweaving, Re-Cycled Art, Woodcarving, Pottery, Jewelry and more! A small farmers’ market will offer fresh produce, plants, and more.
The Local Earth Band will be performing on garbage cans, hub caps, soup pots, coffee cans, and the unexpected! Breakfast at Kristi’s will be serving yummy foods and drinks. Make your own Mother’s Day cards for the kids. Create a special card all out of re-cycled goodies for Mom! In the make your own Tie-Dye T-shirt Booth you can come and learn the art of tie dye! Creating your very own t-shirt. As well as MOPS will host a play area for the children featuring lots of fun for those young of age and heart!
