Free Blues and Jazz Concert in Robert Reed Park

Amy Ferebee & Regina Scott Sanford will perform blues and bluegrass, sophisticated jazz standards with a dash of Beat Poetry thrown in for good measure in a free concert at 4 p.m. on, Saturday, June 28, 2008 in Robert Reed Park in downtown Chincoteague.

Sanford and Ferebee have appeared with or opened for notable performers including: Air Supply, Kenny Loggins, Tony Rice Unit, Osborne Brothers, Taj Mahal, The Kingston Trio, Helen Reddy, Norman & Nancy Blake, Alison Krause and Union Station, the Charlie Byrd Trio, Seldom Scene, and Robin & Linda Williams.

Both performers are strong and distinctive singers who toss the lead duties back and forth while taking turns harmonizing.  Sanford laces in a tasteful array of percussion with rattles, chimes and hand drums over Ferebee’s accomplished guitar foundation.

During the past five years Ferebee and Sanford have collaborated on performance art programs including a work commissioned by The Women?s Studies Department of Tidewater Community College.

Bring a chair or spread a blanket to enjoy the lively art of Sanford and Ferebee as they carry on the great American tradition of a free concert in Robert Reed Park on Chincoteague Island.

June 2008 Chincoteague Second Saturday Art Stroll

Enjoy art under the stars at the 2nd Saturday Art Stroll on Saturday, June 14. The Art Stroll, coordinated by the Chincoteague Cultural Alliance, offers an eclectic mix of free artistic and cultural activities in

Start your stroll at the Oyster and Maritime Museum with a Chincoteague History Show and Tell from 3:00 – 5:00pm with local historians Dino Johnson and David Snead. If music is your passion, bring a chair or blanket to Robert Reed Park at 3:00 for a free concert by the Salisbury Brasswerkes playing light classical music and Broadway hits.

Beginning at 5:00pm, local decoy carver Grayson Chesser will be at Vintage Rose Antiques and Collectibles to demonstrate his craft, appraise decoys and sign copies of his decoy-carving book. Continue on Maddox Blvd. for the Grand Opening of Enchanted Island Boutique featuring live music. Across the street, Island Arts features Bill Troxler and Chip Blackwell playing Celtic music on fiddle, banjo, guitar & hammer dulcimer. Stop by Tomorrow’s Treasures to paint a pony with Diane Greaser and sample Tropical Treats. Next door, the Island Cottage Collection features demonstrations in Metalsmithing and Soap-Making by Jim and Marianne Warren along with pottery and music by Jeremy Wright. Decoys by Butch Daubert, Giclee prints by Carol Rockwell and paintings by Joyce Reed will also be on display.

Head on to Main Street for the Grand Opening of Threadgoods, with drawings for prizes and a live broadcast by local radio station WCTG. Another new gallery – Bayside Arts Co-op – opens with featured artists Jenny Sommers (drawing/painting), Elwye Ess (photography), Tracy Arvidson (painter), Debbie Travis (pencil portraits) and Jackie Gilfoyle (potter).

Take a detour off Main Street to visit the Linda Nerine Gallery with the winners of the ESSC Festival of Arts: Jewelry – Louise Fletcher Cozzi, Pottery – Karen Donleavy and Raku – Kate Tongus. Step back in time with Jay Cherrix at his Renascence Studio, watching a Chincoteague Island film from 1929 and viewing Jay’s new artworks.

Back on Main Street, Helen Sheets will be making baskets at Gull Watch Basketry from 6:00 – 8:00pm. Stop by Egret Moon Artworks to meet Patti and Sara, the jewelers of Patrinkets, and jam with the Earth Day Band. Stroll over to Sundial Books to meet local photographer Mike Cable and view his latest works. Wine, Cheese and More features wine-tasting from the Eastern Shore’s own Chatham Vineyards from 6:00 – 9:30pm. Remember man’s best friend and check out Chincoteague’s only homemade line of specialty dog biscuits and treats all day at Island Butterfly. Across the street, Mia Weldon demonstrates her unique bead-making talents while DJ Michael spins your favorite sounds from yesterday and today.  Last stop? The Second Saturday Soiree at the aNoPheles Blues Gallery where you can join the Paint-In and become a part of Island Art history.

Sundial Books Hosts Author Rebecca M. Hale

Author Rebecca M. Hale will be signing copies of her new mystery novel, HOW TO WASH A CAT, at Sundial Books on Sunday, June 15, 2008 from 2-4 pm. Sundial Books is located at 4073 Main Street, next to the Island Library.

Set in modern day San Francisco, HOW TO WASH A CAT revolves around a mysterious
pair of tulip-shaped cufflinks and the Gold Rush-era legend of the man who once wore
them. The story is told as a first person narrative by an unnamed woman who inherits her
uncle’s antique store. As she begins to explore the dusty contents of the showroom, the
narrator becomes suspicious about the stroke which allegedly caused her uncle’s death. A
cast of quirky characters circle around the narrator and her two cats, Rupert and Isabella,
as she grows closer and closer to unraveling the truth about the cursed cufflinks.
Danger can sneak up on you, especially when you’re not looking for it. Sometimes it
helps to know HOW TO WASH A CAT.

Author Rebecca M. Hale is a 1994 graduate of Colorado State University and a 1997
graduate of Vanderbilt University School of Law. She worked as a patent attorney in the
San Francisco Bay Area for several years before taking time off to write her first novel,
HOW TO WASH A CAT.

Virginia Broadband Roundtable Seeks Volunteers to Submit Data

Robert Wise Film Festival Continues on Friday

The Chincoteague Cultural Alliance will present the second segment of a seven film tribute to revered American editor, director and producer Robert Wise on Friday, May 30 at 7 pm at the Senior Center on Church Street, Chincoteague Island.

Wise was a sound effects editor, a film editor, and an Academy Award winning producer and director. He directed Boris Karloff in the “Body Snatcher,” Steve McQueen in “The Sand Pebbles,” and Michael Renee in “The Day the Earth Stood Still.”

Other noteworthy films by Wise include: “West Side Story,” “The Andromeda Strain,” “The Sound of Music,” “Run Silent, Run Deep,”and “Star Trek: The Motion Picture.”

Few directors were as successful as Wise and virtually no director equals his span of work. The Alliance honors the work of one of America’s greatest directors, who has worked in virtually every genre and produced one of Hollywood’s most eclectic filmographys.

This Friday’s film line up is a boxing double bill with “The Set Up” (1949) beginning at 7pm and “Somebody Up There Likes Me” (1956) at 9pm.

June 13 will feature a horror double bill with “The Body Snatcher” (1945) at 7pm and “The Haunting” (1963) at 9pm.

On June 20, the musical “West Side Story” (1963) wil be screened at 7pm. Rounding out the festival on June 27 will be Wise’s sci-fi epic “The Day The Earth Stood Still” (1951) beginning at 7pm.

All screenings will take place at the Chincoteague Senior Center on Church Street, Chincoteague Island, Virginia.

Tickets are $6 at the door. There will be a $4 senior citizen discount and a $3 student discount. Series tickets for the festival are $20.  Tickets are available online, or at Egret Moon, H&H Pharmacy, Island Cottage Collection, Psychotronic Music and Movies, and Sundial Books on Chincoteague Island.
