Accommodations: Bed and Breakfasts, Hotel - Motels, Cottages and Vacation Rentals

During summer vacations or weekend getaways to Chincoteague Island, visitors have a choice between staying at a motel, bed and breakfast inn, cottage or vacation rental unit.

Motels and hotels are popular options for some travelers and are usually the cheapest option. Motels on Chincoteague Island range from family-owned independent motels to national hotel-motel chains. Depending on the motel, features such as online reservations, points for frequent stays and 24 hour customer assistance may be available. Motels are found along Maddox Blvd, Main Street and other locations. Most room packages include breakfasts, snacks, ice and other amenities.

Although motels have several advantages, they also have several disadvantages. Motels are sometimes busy and crowded, especially during the summer season. Service levels in motels can vary considerably, depending on a variety of factors. Because of their locations, visitors can expect a noisier stay at most motels and hotels.

Bed and breakfasts (sometimes called b&b, breakfast inns or simply inns) are another option for vacationers. Bed and breakfast inns are typically more expensive, but usually offer a more romantic, upscale atmosphere. The island has a good selection of b&b inns on the island as well as on the mainland.

Meals are typically very good at bed and breakfasts. Most establishments provide a full breakfast, with traditional breakfast foods being served. A breakfast at these inns may also include fresh baked scones, muffins or other breads as well as a variety of fresh juices and coffee.

Bed and breakfasts usually offer wines and champagnes. With some of the nation's top wines being produced in Virginia, most inns offer local wines and spirits. Inns usually have information available about local wineries and wine tours.

One advantage of staying at a b & b is the personal attention that patrons receive. Innkeepers offer personal attention and are knowledgeable about local attractions. Owners may also have existing relationships with other local businesses and sometimes can provide special pricing or custom packages for visitors. Whether its providing a special wine, arranging a boat cruise or simply helping guests find their way around the island, innkeepers are usually there when they are needed.

Vacation rentals are another type of accommodation that is available on Chincoteague Island. Vacation rental units are available in a wide range of options including renovated historic homes, cottages, modern apartments and condos.

Chincoteague Island vacation rentals are usually offered by the week. Off season rates are usually lower than peak season, with some businesses offering exceptional deals. During the summer season, vacation rentals are harder to obtain. For the pony swim, penning and auction which occurs in July, accommodations of all types must be booked months or more in advance.
